Uttarakhand - the land of gods, the home of Himalayas and

It was
known as Uttaranchal. Uttarakhand became the 27th state of the
Republic of India on November 9, 2000. In January 2007, the
name of the state was officially changed from Uttaranchal, its
interim name, to Uttarakhand, |

Uttarakhand is a 'paradise' for nature lover's and adventure
sports like river rafting, trekking, paraglyding, corbett
jaungle Jeep safari, enthusiasts. Mussoorie, the 'Queen of
Hills'; Nainital, the 'Lake District'; Almora, the
'Switzerland of India'; Ranikhet, Pithoragarh, Pauri and
Munsyari are just few highlights for the nature lovers. For
adventure and excitement, one may choose Mountaineering (Bhagirathi,
Chowkhamba, Nanda Devi Kamet, Pindari, Sahastrataal, Milam,
Kafni, Khatling, Gaumukh), Trekking, Skiing (Auli, Dayara
Bugyal, Munsyari, Mundali), Skating, Water Sports like
rafting, boating and angling and Aero Sports like Hand

Uttarakhand is composed of two words, "uttar" meaning "north"
and "aanchal" meaning "blessings." Earlier known as "Devbhumi"
meaning "the land of god," Uttarakhand also nourishes a
diverse and rich culture and monuments of historical
importance. Uttarakhand is broadly divided into two zones

| Auli, 8 km from Joshimath is an ideal winter resort run by Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam (GMVN). A 3 km long slope ranging from a height of 2519 to 3049 m is a major attraction. The Auli resort run by GMVN has snow beaters which beat the snow to keep the slopes fit for skiing at all times. A 500 m long ski-lift carries skiiers back to the slope top, thus saving them the trouble and time to bridge up wearing long skis. |

| Haridwar |
|
Haridwar (also known as Hardwar) is a holy city in the
state of Uttarakhand in northern India. Known as the
Gateway to the Gods, Haridwar is considered one of the
seven holiest places according to Hindus, as the devas
are said to have left their footprints there. Here
pilgrims float diyas on the Ganges, to commemorate their
deceased ancestors. The city also stands as a gateway to
three other important pilgrimage destinations: Rishikesh,
Badrinath, and Kedarnath. In Haridwar you will see a
great statue of Shiva at the fork of the river.

elevation of 5500-6500 feet from the sea level in Dehradun

Garhwal region of state between the Yamuna and Tons River.

Lansdowne is a Military station developed by the
Britishers, which is catering for the Recruits Training
center of the Garhwal Rifles. The war memorial at the
Parade Ground of the Garhwal Rifles Center is an

6.09 sq. km. Total population as per 1991 census is
7,106 with 4,415 male populations and 2,691 female
population. The literacy percentage of the city is
89.58. The climate of the city is pleasent in summer,
very cold in winter. |

Chopta is situated at Rudraprayag district of
Uttarakhand State, also known as mini Switzerland
of India. Chopta is located at 2,800mts above sea

|
Counted among the 12 Jyotirlings in the country, Jageshwar lies in a beautiful narrow valley hedged by monarch-sized, ancient deodars. Of the over 100 small and large shrines of this complex, the three outstanding ones, in terms of sculpture, are dedicated of Jageshwar, Mrityunjaya and Pushtidevi. Jageshwar temple has sculpted dwarpals standing guard at its entrance . Although the presiding deity at Jageshwar is shiva a strong Buddhist influence is visible in the carvings. It is about 100 Kms. from Nainital.

Bhimtal is located in the Kumaon region of Uttrakhand ,
in the northern region of India. It is located at an
altitude of 1,371 m above sea level amongst the Kumaon
hills. It is 23 km from Nainital. The main tourist
attraction of this small hill station is its lake. It is
one of the largest lakes in the district of Nainital.
The lake offers scope for boating to the travelers. In
the middle of the lake, there is a beautiful island with
a restaurant. The island provides a panoramic view of
